What Is Magic City in Atlanta? Hawks’ Controversial Pride Night Tribute Explained

The Atlanta Hawks are planning a tribute to one of the most popular strip clubs in the city, named Magic City, on the team’s March 16 game at State Farm Arena against the Orlando Magic. The team has even released a custom hoodie for the Magic City Night. However, several fans and analysts have questioned the team’s decision and expressed their dissent.

Magic City: More than just a strip club for Atlanta Hawks?

Atlanta is known as a hub of one of the oldest running strip clubs in the country, and Magic City is one of them, even though its impact on the city’s culture and identity has been much more significant. Several hip-hop artists and musical talents have played and begun their journey at the legendary club.

The club was founded in 1985 by Michael “Mr. Magic” Barney and the rapper T.I., who is also scheduled to perform at the halftime of the March 16 game. Besides adult entertainment, the place is also known for its lemon pepper wings and for being the center of music revolution in the city.

Migos, Drake, Jermaine Dupri, 2 Chainz, Big Boi, Future, and several others have been a part of the club’s history. However, users on social media have had varied reactions to the NBA’s decision. Some believe that the league is a family platform and should not collaborate with such organizations.

Several former players and analysts have also expressed their disagreement with the NBA allowing such events during live games on public platforms. The San Antonio Spurs center, Luke Kornet, took to Medium and expressed his honest opinions. He said:

“The NBA should desire to protect and esteem women, many of whom work diligently every day to make this the best basketball league in the world. We should promote an atmosphere that is protective and respectful of the daughters, wives, sisters, mothers, and partners that we know and love.

“Allowing this night to go forward without protest would reflect poorly on us as an NBA community, specifically in being complicit in the potential objectification and mistreatment of women in our society.”

Although the team has stated in its statement that no dancers will participate in the festivities, the decision has continued to face backlash from fans. The league and the team have not yet announced any changes to the plans.

Magic City Kitchen will also serve both the “Louwill” and traditional lemon pepper wings at the game, and the custom hoodies will be available for sale.
