Rarely do athletes go into political discussions during press sessions, but LeBron James was asked a political question during the NBA All-Star weekend. However, his answer did not sit well with a section of fans and analysts, including Kyrie Irving. Although he did not openly declare the topic of his video, the 9-time All-Star called out the conversation between King James and the media person.
During an Instagram Live session, afterwards posted on X, Irving talked about what happened during the All-Star game pregame media session. He said:
“We don’t even ask real questions during All-Star weekend. No real question that happened bro, no real questions, and anytime somebody asked a real question, it’s like, it’s a lob for something else or brand setup or anything. And you’ll know the real question I’m talking about.”
The 2016 NBA champion repeated the sentence, “You’ll know the real question I am talking about,” several times, seemingly suggesting the LeBron James event, because that was the only political question during the media session that quickly went viral on social media.
Notably, Irving is known to be a pro-Palestine supporter, as he was recently seen wearing a “Press” t-shirt, seemingly pointing towards the killing of journalists in Gaza. Meanwhile, Irving and James are close friends and were even part of the title-winning Cleveland Cavaliers team in 2016. The two often share heartfelt moments on the court.
Stephen A. Smith blames LeBron James for downfall of All-Star Slam Dunk contest
Stephen A. Smith, who is known for criticizing LeBron James on several occasions, once again fired shots at the 4-time NBA champion for fans’ lack of interest in the event. He suggested that LBJ never cared about fans’ interest in watching him put up some stellar dunks during the weekend.
Smith said:
“The person who really is the provocateur to ruin the slam dunk contest was him [LeBron James]. He was a superstar who put on a dunk contest every night in the layup line, particularly when he knew that the momentum was swelling for him to participate but he never did.”
King James is one of the most popular players in the league, and fans flock to the arenas just to see him dunk. Smith’s point might not be completely out of his dislike for the forward.
The NBA All-Star weekend is still a work in progress, as the league is continuously evolving the format to make it more entertaining for fans.
