The ongoing uncertainty over Peyton Watson’s future with the Denver Nuggets has made him the subject of intense media trade chatter. While both sides continue to negotiate a new contract, the 23-year-old forward reportedly wants a lucrative deal that is not far apart from what the Nuggets are willing to offer.
It is believed Watson wants a long-term deal worth an average annual value exceeding $25 million (aiming for the $25 to $30 million range), while the Nuggets prefer a more conservative number to avoid pushing deep into second-apron cap territory. Other teams are watching the Watson contract talks, looking for an opportunity to swing a trade for him if negotiations reach an impasse.
On Friday, Jake Fischer of The Stein Line claimed that the Atlanta Hawks have recently emerged among the possible suitors for the restricted free agent this summer. Fischer also reported Denver’s asking price, making it clear that the 2023 NBA champions are hoping to land a massive return.
According to him, the Nuggets’ asking price is similar to what the Utah Jazz got for Walker Kessler: two unprotected first-round picks and two first-round pick swaps.
With Peyton Watson being a former first-round pick who just had a massive breakout year, it is understandable that the Nuggets are looking to land a decent return. They are also in no immediate rush to move him, giving them leverage in negotiations.
There could certainly be teams willing to meet that asking price, as Watson still possesses the potential to develop into a quality NBA player. A change of scenery could be exactly what the young forward needs to take the next step and become a more consistent contributor.
Watson appeared in 54 games this past season, where he averaged career highs of 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per contest.
Is Peyton Watson a Worthwhile Gamble for the Atlanta Hawks?
The idea of the Atlanta Hawks executing a sign-and-trade for Peyton Watson is undoubtedly a fascinating one. Sure, that $25 million annual salary might not look so hefty in a few years given how quickly the NBA salary cap is evolving, but at the same time, a front office would caution against giving up quite a bit of draft capital and losing the cap space needed to potentially pivot to better talent in the future.
That said, it is not every day that a legitimate two-way wing with Watson’s upside becomes available, especially one whose contract could prove to be a bargain as the NBA’s salary cap continues to increase.
Aside from the point guard position, one of the Hawks’ biggest needs is another reliable forward. While Watson is still developing, he has shown enough potential to project as a long-term fit. A change of scenery could also help unlock his full potential, particularly with a team that values his skill set.
Trading for Watson would certainly be a gamble, but there may be enough upside to justify the risk. At worst, the 23-year-old develops into a dependable forward who averages around 12.0 points per game while providing value on both ends of the floor. At best, the Hawks land a long-term starter who helps strengthen their forward rotation and becomes an important piece of the franchise’s future.
