Magic Johnson’s son, EJ Johnson, shared the moment when they were outed as gay by TMZ Sports after the media organization shared pictures of the actor holding hands with a man in 2013. In a recent conversation, Johnson talked about their feelings after coming out and the impact it had on their personal life.
EJ Johnson featured on Carlos King’s YouTube channel and labeled the incident in 2013 as “highly inappropriate” in current terms. The reality TV personality said:
“To me, at the time, it was just like it just happened, it was one of those overnight success moments, but like I was ready because I was living my life, it wasn’t like I was hiding anything. It wasn’t scary in that instance, to feel outed in that way cuz I was living my life to the fullest.”
Carlos King and Magic Johnson’s son exchanged stories of them coming out and discussed the difference between eras in terms of the acceptance of the LGBTQIA+ community and their recognition in the social sphere.
The two also talked about the impact of coming out openly as gay on an athlete’s life and how that notion has still percolated in the big leagues.
“Wiped away,” Magic Johnson’s son opens up on athletes coming out
Magic Johnson’s son, EJ Johnson, who is also known for starring in the reality TV series Rich Kids of Beverly Hills, talked about how those who came out on their own have not been able to continue their careers. The LGBTQIA+ advocate referred to NBA and NFL athletes, who came out of their own will, and said:
“Even the people who did it on their own accord never went much further in their careers, especially those athletes, like they were like, ‘Oh, hey,’ and then wiped away, completely. Yeah, that basketball player nd that football player, they were like, ‘You think you’re gonna play after this?’ No. Totally dismissed… The industry didn’t allow that to continue.”
Johnson seemingly pointed at NBA player Jason Collins and NFL player Carl Nassib. Collins, who played for the Boston Celtics in 2013, when he made his sexual orientation public, could not continue his career further than one season. He announced his retirement in 2014.
Nassib, on the other hand, was with the LV Raiders in 2021 when he came out publicly. After playing two more seasons with the Raiders and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he retired in 2023. So, EJ Johnson’s statement about athletes’ careers can not be denied.
