As the NBA Finals hype train continues, the New York Knicks are on the verge of a championship after they last won a title in 1973. However, the series has been one of the most exciting finals in recent times, even off the court. A new controversy sprang up when a Knicks fan alleged that the San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama got him and his family out of a hotel.
Earlier, a Knicks fan shared a video on X, narrating a story about his stay at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel New York, NoMad, during Game 5. He claimed that his penthouse was on the same floor as Wemby, and while the two ran into each other once, the fan’s friend wished good luck to the French center.
However, that short conversation, the fan alleged, led the Spurs superstar to the management and the family to exit their penthouse. The fan, named Phil Godlewski, also claimed in the video that the hotel management refused to show them the CCTV footage, even when they could see the camera in the lobby where the two came face-to-face.
The fan said in the video:
“Victor Wembanyama is actually my son’s favorite player, and we have many jerseys of him… So today we’re having a jersey burning party… and I think the lesson here for the youth of America is no matter who your favorite athlete is, if they are not a good person, they shouldn’t be your favorite athlete.”
Godlewski added:
“22-year old child Victor Wembanyama is not, and never will be, a role model for the children watching the current NBA. Shame on him, and shame on the entire San Antonio Spurs organization.”
As the fan and his sons decided to light Wemby’s jersey on fire, he made serious allegations about Wemby’s behavior toward the home crowd. However, there is no official confirmation of their veracity from Wemby or anyone else close to him. Meanwhile, the 7-foot-4 center had every reason to be upset after Game 5, as the Spurs suffered a difficult loss to go into a 1-3 hole.
Victor Wembanyama unfazed by Knicks fans’ behavior at MSG
Victor Wembanyama also experienced some unexpected fan interactions at Madison Square Garden. The Spurs faced difficult losses on the court, while fans off the court made things difficult for Wemby. When a media person asked the center about his thoughts on such fan activities, he was unfazed by such incidents.
Wemby responded:
“I mean, I didn’t really think much of it. I just saw that one video, but it’s okay, I don’t dislike it, obviously, it’s not good at all, but doesn’t bother me.”
Wembanyama and the Spurs will be back in San Antonio among a familiar crowd, but they will be under pressure to make a comeback if they want to survive in the series. It’s time for a high-intensity Game 5 at Frost Bank Center.
