Has Steve Kerr Actually Developed Any Young Stars to Reach Their Potential? Theo Pinson Escalates Beef With Warriors Coach With Scathing Allegation

Steve Kerr’s beef with Jonathan Kuminga was in the limelight during the mid-season trade period and in the off-season, when the forward’s relationship with the Warriors management worsened. On the To The Baha podcast, the crew, including former NBA player Theo Pinson, talked about the Warriors’ coach’s ability to develop young talent and highlighted a flaw in Kerr’s coaching career.

The former Dallas Mavericks shooting guard sounded off on the Olympic gold medal-winning coach and blamed him for only working with elite hoopers and not contributing to developing new NBA talents. He said:

“They have a problem with Steve Kerr not willing to develop and let Jonathan Kuminga flourish. That’s the issue. I will never put Steve Kerr in the same aspect as Gregg Popovich, never. I will never put him in the same light as Spoelstra. I can’t put you in the same light as Gregg Popovich, Spoelstra, and Ty Lue as a great coach that has developed young talent to get that young talent paid.

“If you’re gonna sit here and let your ego decide that I’m not gonna play him so I’m right. Why are you being the head coach of my basketball team?”

Pinson then went on to drop some other examples of how Gregg Popovich got a late pick in Tony Parker, but developed him into a hot prospect in the NBA, and Kawhi Leonard, who was also drafted late but was developed by Popovich into a top star. Other co-hosts also named Devin Vassell and Dejounte Murray, as a few other names who were developed into well-rounded NBA players by the legendary Popovich.

Analyzing Theo Pinson’s claim on Steve Kerr

Steve Kerr has been one of the most accomplished coaches in the NBA and has worked with the greatest shooter ever born for the majority of his career. Even though legendary coaching names like Gregg Popovich, Ty Lue, and Eric Spoelstra have brought several young talents to the league and moulded them into hot prospects, to say that Kerr has not done that ever might not be completely in line.

The Splash Brothers were all outside the top five picks and formed a superteam under Kerr that produced four NBA championships. He was also a crucial part of Kevin Durant’s early days in the league.

Apart from obvious names, Kerr has also helped Jordan Poole in becoming an overall shooter and made him a decent scorer, averaging a career-best 20.5 points in the 2024-25 season with the Wizards. Other rookies like Trayce Jackson-Davis are also part of that list.
