Steve Kerr and ICE Minnesota Controversy Explained: What Did the Warriors Coach Do and Why Is He Apologizing?

The Golden State Warriors were in Minnesota for their game against the Wolves, and like everybody else, head coach Steve Kerr was asked about his comments on the situation in Minneapolis. The city streets have been filled with protesters after Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s agents were allegedly involved in recent killings and the arrest of a 5-year-old child named Liam Ramos.

In his statement after the Warriors’ loss against the Wolves, the HC was dismissive of ICE operations and said:

“It’s not like they’re rooting out violent criminals. They’re taking 5-year-old kindergartners and U.S. citizens and detaining people.”

Kerr’s statements caught fire on social media, as several questioned his ignorance of the government agency. The issue was again highlighted by the OutKick media when Kerr joined the presser at Chase Center. The coach apologized for his earlier statement on ICE and admitted that he might have spread “misinformation.”

    Steve Kerr replied:

“You’re right, I definitely misspoke, and I knew that ICE was arresting some criminals.”

HC Kerr also clarified his earlier statement, explaining that he did not mean what was received by the public. He added:

“I immediately regretted it because I knew that to be the case. My point is that they’re also arresting people and detaining citizens and people who should not be being detained. The manner in which they’re doing it, as you see, is riling everybody up all over the country.”

Kerr also explained his feelings about visiting Minnesota and what he felt about the protests:

“Being in Minneapolis for those four days was incredibly emotional and powerful. It was a very difficult time for all of us. At the end of those four days, it was a pretty emotional time. I misspoke, and I apologize for the misinformation. I hope everybody else out there who’s saying stuff that’s not true, please apologize, too. All right, let’s talk about basketball.”

The Warriors are already in the middle of a roster situation with Jimmy Butler’s season-ending injury and Jonathan Kuminga’s disinterest in playing with the squad. With Giannis Antetokounmpo reportedly being considered for a move to Golden State, Kerr might not want to get entangled in off-court matters.

Steve Kerr and the Warriors reportedly pursuing Giannis Antetokounmpo

The Milwaukee Bucks are reportedly in talks with the Warriors for a trade deal to bring Giannis Antetokounmpo to Golden State. With Steph Curry in the twilight of his career, the team’s front office might be desperate to land the Greek Freak to help them make a playoff run.

Giannis might create the strongest one-two punch in the league. He will add the needed defense and versatility to the squad and a proper shooting option beside Steph. While there is still no confirmation about the future of the Bucks forward, Steve Kerr and the management will hope for a turnaround this season.
