Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini’s scandal shocked the NFL world as the long-term insider was outed for allegedly having an extramarital affair with New England head coach Mike Vrabel. After a long-drawn saga, Russini stepped away from the Athletic.
However, Vrabel, whose future with the New England Patriots is under no scrutiny as of now, has drawn the attention of NFL MVP-turned-analyst Cam Newton.
Newton took issue with New England’s way of dealing with the situation in his podcast, subtly pointing out that the Super Bowl runner-up head coach should be fired, following in the footsteps of Sherrone Moore:
“I got a list of coaches that done got fired, controlled, all deleted, expunged, erased, gone to Apollo-Sandman pushed off the stage for having infidelity issues. Well, Urban… doggone Sherrone, the Michigan man. Now he a Michigan man. That’s definitely right.” (4:15 onwards)
Newton continued:
“What you need to say is basically every single one of those coaches—outside of Urban—he just wasn’t winning. Yeah. All them other coaches, they was flirting where they were working. Yeah. And you can’t do that. Can’t do that. You can’t flirt at work.” (9:40)
Mike Vrabel issued an apology during the pre-draft Patriots conference, addressing the issue and apologizing to the players for ‘taking the attention away’ from the 2026 NFL Draft, which happened just days after.
The New England Patriots have shown support for their second-year head coach and granted Vrabel permission to step away from the NFL Draft as VP of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf took over drafting duties.
Sherrone Moore Was Fired Days After Paige Shiver Scandal Came to Light
While the nature of the situations was wildly different, Sherrone Moore and Paige Shiver were similarly outed for having an affair, despite Moore being married to his wife, Kelli Moore.
Shortly after the situation came to light, Moore was arrested by the police for forcefully entering Shiver’s home and threatening her with a knife. Moore was placed on probation for 18 months and fined over $1000 for the incident. Additionally, Moore was ordered to have no contact with the former staffer.
The University of Michigan announced that both Moore and Shiver were let go of their positions just two days after the school found ‘credible evidence’ supporting its decision.
