2024 is a fresh start for the Michigan State Spartans football program. After off-field scandal inevitably permeated the on-field product, the Spartans slipped to a 4-8 record with just two conference wins.

There’s a new head coach in East Lansing this fall, not to mention significant roster turnover, as the program looks to rebound. Will the Michigan State 2024 football schedule help smooth the transition or provide insurmountable obstacles?

According to the CFN Strength of Schedule, the Michigan State 2024 football schedule is the 12th easiest in the newly expanded Big Ten. The out-of-conference component of the Spartans’ 12 games certainly helps, with games at home to the Florida Atlantic Owls and Prairie View A&M Panthers giving them winnable early games. They also face the Boston College Eagles in Week 4.

Their nine-game Big Ten schedule gets underway as early as Week 2, with the Spartans traveling to the Maryland Terrapins. It’s one of just four road games in conference play, an additional element of the Michigan State 2024 football schedule that is advantageous to Jonathan Smith’s team as they look to put the previous campaign behind them and focus on the future.

A West Coast trip to face the Oregon Ducks and a road game in Ann Arbor against bitter rival Michigan Wolverines showcase that there will be tough obstacles to overcome, but their final road game of the season against an Illinois Fighting Illini program they beat in Champaign just two years ago should prove a good measuring stick for the progress of the program.

With just four conference road games, the Michigan State 2024 football schedule will feature five Big Ten in East Lansing. Their most difficult games — against the Ohio State Buckeyes and Iowa Hawkeyes — come early on, before winnable matchups with the Indiana Hoosiers, Purdue Boilermakers, and Rutgers Scarlet Knights round out the 2024 college football campaign.
