Army Black Knights associate head coach and offensive line coordinator Mike Viti, who hails from a unique background that concerns real combat battles, has found a new home. On Tuesday, March 3, it was announced that the Miami Hurricanes, coached by Mario Cristobal, have hired Viti as their tight ends coach for the 2026 college football season.
In a post by On3’s collegiate football insider Chris Low on his X/Twitter account, he laid out Viti’s background. According to Low, Viti was once deployed as a platoon leader in Afghanistan, specifically in the Arghandab River Valley. In the process, Viti apparently received a bronze star and a combat action badge for his efforts, as it is said that he was attacked almost every day by the Taliban.
Given his unique background, the Miami-based program has gotten a hard-nosed member in its coaching staff in Viti, heading into the upcoming campaign. Viti has spent the last 11 years with the Black Knights, first leading the charge as a Director of High School and Alumni Relations in 2015. He was then offered the role of one of the school’s assistant coaches for football.
He was promoted to the associate coach and offensive line coordinator role at the tail end of the 2025 campaign before being offered a new position by the Hurricanes. In his final year with coach Jeff Monken’s Army squad, he helped them finish with an overall record of 6-6 (4-4 American), as the team finished the year as the No. 6 overall seed in the 2026 American conference standings.
Mike Viti’s Final Game With The Army Black Knights Ended Up As A Postseason Bowl Victory
To conclude the 2025 college football season and his decade-long Army Black Knights stint, Mike Viti was a part of the Black Knights squad that won the 2025 Wasabi Fenway Bowl.
Viti and company did so by beating coach Jedd Fisch’s Washington Huskies back on Dec. 27 of last year by an astounding 25 points, 41-16, at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts.
