“Better Hope They Get [Darian] Mensah”: Fans Abuzz As Miami Left Without Starting QB After Emory Williams’ Transfer Portal Move

On Monday, the Miami Hurricanes fell at home to the Indiana Hoosiers in the national championship game. Thus, their College Football Playoff run came to an end, with Mario Cristobal’s team being one win shy of absolute glory. Nonetheless, life goes on, and the Hurricanes are already thinking of next year.

The main issue for Miami at the moment is the quarterback position. Carson Beck is out of eligibility, so he won’t be able to play for them next season. If there was any hope that Emory Williams would be the team’s next quarterback, that quickly evaporated, as Monday night turned into Tuesday afternoon. The team’s backup for the 2025 season transferred to the East Carolina Pirates.

While some fans were put off by the decision to get rid of the former three-star recruit, others understood this is the way Miami works in the new NIL and transfer portal reality.

“Miami doesn’t recruit or develop QBs. I wouldn’t sniff Miami out of HS unless the NIL was ridiculous. They will have a new transfer Qb yearly,” explained one fan.

Miami fans had nothing but kind words for Williams.

“Bro will always be a legend for beating fsu,” said one ‘Canes fan.

“Always been good to us, goodluck,” said another Miami fan.

“Forever a canes legend for that Clemson win❤️,” wrote one person.

East Carolina Pirates fans are happy to see him arrive.

“Emory Williams, you are an ECU Pirate,” excitedly one fan.

A few fans wanted to see him stay with the Hurricanes.

“He should’ve got the shot to lead next year he knows the system,” explained another individual.

Is Duke’s Darian Mensah coming to Miami?

“Basically confirms that Mensah is coming here,” ventured one person.

“Better hope they get mensah 😂,” said someone else.

Who Will Be the Next Miami Quarterback?

Until a couple of weeks ago, Sam Leavitt was the favorite to become Miami’s quarterback. However, that dream ended when the LSU Tigers scooped the Arizona State signal-caller. Now the favorite to become Miami’s next quarterback is Duke’s Darian Mensah, according to 247Sports.

Four-star transfer Mensah is the highest-ranking quarterback left in the transfer portal. He’s ranked as the 18th best overall player in the portal and the sixth best signal-caller.

The situation has gotten complicated, though, as Duke University has initiated legal action against Mensah to prevent him from transferring. They allege this would be a violation of his NIL contract.

While the contract states this kind of situation ought to be resolved through arbitration, the Blue Devils have gone to court to ask for a temporary restraining order, stating that if Mensah is allowed to transfer, it would be impossible to return to the status quo through arbitration. The situation remains unresolved, as the judge is a Duke booster and had to recuse himself from the case.
