Four-star defensive lineman Ben’Jarvius Shumaker flipped his commitment from Ole Miss to Colorado in less than 24 hours after publicly announcing that he was shutting down his recruitment.
For Ole Miss fans, the flip came as a surprise. Shumaker had previously announced his commitment to the Rebels and appeared locked in with the program.
While Colorado supporters celebrated the addition, many fans focused on how quickly recruiting decisions can change in the NIL era.
“Money talks. No commitments are solid anymore. Might as well not report them until signing day,” one fan wrote.
Another fan commented, “The auction has begun! I would just back off until signing day with some of these guys.”
Others expressed frustration with how little certainty commitments seem to carry today.
“Commitment doesn’t hold weight anymore, I don’t trust they will be part of the team until I see them in a game at this point,” one fan wrote.
Another user wrote: “Your word is the only thing you have in this life and when you throw it away like this it’s meaningless. Nobody will trust you.”
“Good place to go if you don’t mind losing a lot,” one wrote, mocking the program.
Colorado Scores Major Recruiting Win With Ben’Jarvius Shumaker
Shumaker is one of the top defensive linemen in the nation. He is ranked in the top 65 nationally in the 2027 class and is the number two player in the state of Mississippi.
During his junior season, he recorded 113 total tackles, 24 tackles for loss, and 8.5 sacks in total.
On March 7, he made it official that he was committed to Ole Miss on his social media, writing:
“First, I want to thank God, my family, and my coaches for believing in me and supporting me through this journey. With that being said, I’m blessed to announce that I have committed to Ole Miss.”
However, now the Buffaloes have somehow landed one of the top defensive prospects in the country. Whether the flip becomes a recruiting victory or another bad decision, only time will tell.
