Will Wade left McNeese to become head coach at NC State in 2025. One season later, Wade has changed schools again, returning to the LSU Tigers, where he served as head coach from 2017 to 2022. McNeese’s Athletic Director Heath Schroyer has also followed Wade to Baton Rouge, becoming LSU’s Senior Deputy Director of Athletics and Executive Director of External Relations.
On Tuesday, plans were revealed for Schroyer and Wade during their visit to Lake Charles for an NIL event. According to Schroyer, Wade has committed that LSU will play McNeese in an open scrimmage, with the proceeds from the event going solely to McNeese.
Under Will Wade and Heath Schroyer, LSU is increasing NIL investment in basketball. The potential event at Lake Charles is a win-win move for both programs. McNeese gets ticket revenue, NIL money and huge exposure hosting a top program like LSU. Meanwhile, the Tigers build their identity among their fanbase. This way, Wade can give back to the program that hired him following his controversial exit from LSU in 2022.
It appears Wade and Schroyer are rebuilding the program fast so that they can compete financially with top SEC teams.
Will Wade on the Positive Impact of Relationship With Heath Schroyer and Wade Rousse
The trio of Will Wade, Heath Schroyer and Wade Rousse worked with McNeese and made them a regional powerhouse in college basketball. Now they have reunited to take the LSU Tigers to new heights.
During his introductory press conference, Wade spoke highly of his association with Schroyer and Rousse and how it will benefit the program.
“We can take that same formula with more resources and more support, just because of the financial aspect of it all, and we can take that formula that made McNeese a regional power and won a first-round NCAA tournament game, and we can take that and move that to LSU, and we can make ourselves a national force,” Wade said.
“And I have a deep belief in that, and that’s the reason I’m here. We didn’t come here, as I said, this isn’t about nostalgia, this isn’t about, this is about, this is a great fit.”
Schroyer hired Wade at McNeese in 2023 after his LSU firing. They are described as being “connected at the hip” due to trust. It remains to be seen whether Wade’s words result in LSU becoming a top program in the SEC.
