After leaving LSU in 2022 due to bribing recruits’ families, failing to cooperate with investigations, and conducting a “strong-a** offer” scheme discovered by the FBI, Will Wade is set to return as the Tigers’ head coach.
To get him, the LSU Tigers will hand over a $5 million payout to NC State, where Wade spent a single season in charge. That is, if the transaction goes through in March, it could drop to $3 million if the move goes through after April 2.
Wade is getting a tempting seven-year deal at Baton Rouge. While the exact details of how much money he will be paid are unknown, outlet Football Scoop expects the deal to be worth around $30 million. That would mean he would receive $5 million per year.
The decision is doubly costly for the LSU Tigers, who will also have to pay $8 million to current coach Matt McMahon for firing him without cause. The salary Will Wade will be making is likely to be on the lower end of SEC coaches, but possibly double what he made in his first stint at Baton Rouge.
Will Wade’s Statement to the NC State Community on His Decision to Leave the School After One Season
Will Wade released a statement on X after confirming his decision to leave Raleigh, North Carolina. He also used the opportunity to thank the Wolfpack community, specifically athletic director Boo Corrigan.
“I want to take a moment to sincerely thank North Carolina State University, Athletic Director Boo Corrigan, and the entire administration for the opportunity to be part of something special. From day one, everything that was promised to me and my staff was delivered-and then some. That kind of commitment is rare, and it speaks volumes about the leadership and vision here at NC State,” Wade wrote.
“This was not an easy decision, because of how much respect and appreciation I have for this program and this university. But the opportunity to return to Louisiana State University is deeply personal. It’s a chance to go home—to a place that means a great deal to me and my family. I’ll always be grateful for my time here, the relationships we built, and the foundation we helped strengthen. NC State is positioned for continued success, and l’ll be cheering them on moving forward,” he added.
Will Wade’s emphasis was on the move being of high emotional significance for him. However, one cannot help but wonder what the point of the last four years was for LSU and Wade.
