After having left Baton Rouge a couple of years ago and a series of NCAA recruiting violations, Will Wade recently moved from the NC State Wolfpack back to the LSU Tigers. The move put everyone off at Raleigh, given the quick and unexpected manner in which it happened.
At the time, Wade was extremely apologetic towards the Wolfpack’s authorities, saying that he was grateful for the opportunity, especially to NC State’s athletic director, Boo Corrigan. However, he seems to have changed his tune, as he recently said the following in an interview as LSU’s basketball coach:
“I think some of the things have been mischaracterized on how I left, but I’m not gonna get into a back-and-forth. The people who need to know, know. When there’s a situation like this, everybody has to cover, let’s put it that way. I’m at peace with how I left… Look, they’re pretty mad for a coach they didn’t think was very good.”
Wade’s sole season at NC State was unremarkable, with the Wolfpack finishing 20-14 in the regular season, which tied them seventh in the ACC standings. They also reached the first round of the NCAA Tournament, where they fell to the Texas Longhorns.
Is Will Wade Going to Clean House at LSU, or Will He Keep Part of the Roster and Coaching Staff?
In the same press conference, Will Wade spoke about the changes to come to Baton Rouge. He did say he will be personally in charge of recruiting and roster decisions, and that those duties wouldn’t be shared with anyone else.
However, Wade added that he would take a look at the current roster and coaching staff at LSU, and that he would seriously consider who to keep moving forward.
“We want anybody at LSU that wants to be at LSU. If you want to be here, we want you here. Those conversations will continue, and we’re going to support the guys whatever they want to do. If they want to stay here at LSU. We’re going to support them and find a role for them. If they want to go somewhere else, we’re going to support them in that as well,” Wade said.
In the end, this is an expensive move for LSU, with them having to pay NC State $4 million for Wade’s payout, and also $8 million for sacking Matt McMahon.
