UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley is just two wins away from lifting his third national championship in four years after the program defeated the Duke Blue Devils 73-72 in Sunday’s Elite Eight matchup.
On Monday, ESPN’s Get Up discussed Hurley’s credentials and compared them with the best. Analyst Jay Williams compared him to Coach K (short for Mike Krzyzewski), who led Duke to five national titles, 13 Final Four appearances, 15 ACC tournament championships, and 13 ACC regular season titles.
“He’s the best and most brilliant mind we have in the game of college basketball,” Williams said. “He’s one of the most polarizing figures and one of the best geniuses we have in the game. And if he wins his third championship in four years, he is the modern age Coach K.
“Okay. Like that, that’s what it is. Like he is thrust into an echelon that rare few people have ever been in. And the fact he’s done it in a four-year span, even just getting back to the Final Four, talks about his sheer coaching ability and how much of a genius he is in the game today.”
UConn HC Dan Hurley on Braylon Mullins’ Game-Winning 3-Pointer
Dan Hurley’s team struggled in the first half, and at one point, they were even trailing by as much as 19 points in the game. However, the Huskies never gave and were determined to take down the lead. They first got to single digits and then in the final minute, they got really close.
Finally, it was Braylon Mullins, who, despite shooting 0-for-4 from the 3-point line, was given back the ball to shoot with 0.3 seconds remaining. Mullins made it count as the ball went in and fans stood up in cheers to celebrate an all-time classic. Hurley perfectly described the moment:
“Yeah, you know what? You’re just kind of watching the flight of the ball, you’re just kind of tracking it, I knew it was a deep shot. I didn’t realize how far away he was until I watched the replay of it. It was kind of tracking on line and Braylon’s such a special shooter that, that’s what March Madness is all about, moments like that, players making plays and shots like that.”
Hurley now has a chance to win another championship in the 2020s. However, they first have to clear the Final Four obstacle in the form of Illinois in order to reach the national championship game.
