Will Syracuse Fire Adrian Autry? Inside the Uncertain Future of the Orange Coach

Adrian Autry has had a long history with the Syracuse Orange men’s basketball program. He played for the Orange during his collegiate career from 1990 to 1994. Autry played at the point guard position.

Six years after he started his coaching career, Autry joined Syracuse as an assistant in 2011. In 2016, he was promoted to associate HC and became the head coach of the program in 2023. Autry’s future with Syracuse is now uncertain.

He has a 49-48 overall record with the Orange, 24-34 in the conference. Autry’s first season with Syracuse was his most successful season, with a 20-12 overall record and 11-9 in the conference. It has been a downward spiral for Autry since.

This season, the Syracuse Orange finished 15-17 overall and 6-12 in the conference, standing 14th on the chart. They lost their last game 69-86 against the SMU Mustangs, ending their season on a six-game losing streak.

The losses have been piling up for years, making it impossible for the program to continue with Autry in the head coaching position. As per Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, Syracuse has made the final call, and the announcement will be made soon.

“Sources: Syracuse will part ways with Adrian Autry. Official announcement expected today,” he reported.

Back-to-back losing seasons and a five-year NCAA Tournament drought can’t be ignored. Autry was expected to shape the program into worthy contenders. He showed potential in his first season, which gave fans hope.

But the last two years have been disappointing to say the least, and the consistent failure has led the program to make this call. It’ll be interesting to see where Autry ends up next.

Adrian Autry Knew His Future Was Uncertain

Just like good players, good coaches are their biggest critics. When the world knows that Autry hasn’t done well at his job, especially in the last two seasons, Autry knows it too. He hinted at his uncertain future after the loss against the SMU Mustangs.

Autry stated that he knew he didn’t do the job he was handed. Even in his own assessment of his run with Syracuse, he fell short.

“I don’t shy away from the job that I did,” Autry said. “I’m harder on myself than anybody. I didn’t get the results that we wanted.”

After back-to-back losing seasons, the biggest problem for Syracuse would be finding the right coach for the team. Their roster is full of talented players; they just need someone who can bring the best out of them.
