Arkansas Razorbacks coach John Calipari has weighed in on his relationship with recently retired University of Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart. On Tuesday, March 3, it was announced on the official website of the University of Kentucky that its long-tenured athletic director has decided to retire.
Calipari reacted to the announcement on his X/Twitter page by giving a glimpse into what his relationship with Barnhart looks like. According to Calipari, he did not always see eye-to-eye with Barnhart as they had a tough coach-director relationship through the years. Nevertheless, Calipari has nothing but high hopes for Barnhart and his wife, Connie, in their new venture.
Before taking over the Arkansas-based program, Calipari was a successful coach for the Kentucky Wildcats for 15 years, from 2009 to 2024. Under his tutelage, the Wildcats won their lone national championship in 2012. The tenured tactician is best known for producing some of the best guards to come out of college basketball, who are now considered NBA stars.
These include Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, De’Aaron Fox, and Tyrese Maxey, as coach Mark Pope has since taken over the Kentucky-based program. For now, it can be inferred that there may have been some friction between Calipari and Barnhart through the years. But it seems they are now in good faith, given Calipari’s recent message.
Calipari’s focus remains on the Razorbacks, who currently possess an overall record of 21-8 (11-5 SEC) in the 2025-26 college basketball season.
Mitch Barnhart Will Take A Less Proactive Role With The University of Kentucky
Fortunately for the University of Kentucky faithful, Mitch Barnhart, who has served the school for about 25 years, will not be fully separated from the university, as he intends to become an executive-in-residence of the University of Kentucky’s Sport and Workforce Initiative.
This is according to a recent report by Jason Marcum of A Sea of Blue, which confirmed that details of this role will follow at a later date.
