After Kansas Jayhawks freshman Darryn Peterson was called for an offensive foul, head coach Bill Self expressed his frustration towards the referees, leading to his ejection from the contest after receiving two technical fouls.
The moment happened in the first half with 6:07 remaining. The Arizona State Sun Devils were leading the game 23-16 at that point. With Self’s ejection, Kansas was led by assistant coach Jacque Vaughn for the rest of the game.
Arizona State’s defender didn’t allow Peterson to run free and as the freshman was trying to get away, he was called out for the foul. The broadcaster on the video narrated the whole situation leading to Self’s two technical fouls, meaning automatic ejection.
“Peterson comes off screens either way,” the broadcaster said. “He tries to go to his left, but Bryce Ford just will not let Peterson move. That is a foul on Bryce Ford. And you have to allow freedom of movement, and Bill Self has publicly talked about it, allowing Peterson to move off the ball. And Coach Self was very upset. He came all the way across half court onto the floor for the first technical. And it was rapid fire, bang, bang, ejection. Even Bobby Early, I think, was like, how is that a thing?”
It was Self’s third ejection in the last three seasons
This game is important for Kansas in many ways as they hope to secure the best seed in the coming NCAA Tournament. There are 21-8 and 11-5 in the Big 12 conference. After this game, Kansas plays against Kansas State at home.
Bill Self on Darryn Peterson & Off-Ball Movement
Bill Self has previously publicly commented on the off-the-ball movement from Darryn Peterson.
Self said Peterson was continuously being held off from running without the ball, limiting his ability to get the ball, and that officials were letting that go. Self expects that to change because he doesn’t believe there are many offensive players he’s coached that don’t get the same “freedom of movement” that most players do.
“I certainly hope that that can change,” Self said Monday. “Because I don’t believe that I’ve seen very many players in my time that are good offensive players that the freedom of movement doesn’t exist in the way it does with most players.”
It appears that Self’s public comments were not taken seriously by officials and the head coach finally reached his boiling point with just six minutes into the game.
