On Tuesday, Feb. 10, coach Jai Lucas and his Miami Hurricanes clashed with coach Hubert Davis‘ North Carolina Tar Heels on the former’s home court, the Watsco Center in Coral Gables, Florida.
The Tar Heels, who are nationally ranked at No. 11, lost 75-66 to the unranked Hurricanes in away territory. In an X post by college basketball analyst Jeff Borzello, it was detailed that the Miami-based program held UNC to a lowly 27% field-goal percentage in the second half, along with just 1-of-13 from three-point territory.
This is the primary factor that led to North Carolina, which recently beat the Duke Blue Devils, being upset by the Hurricanes. Along with the above-mentioned statistics, the Hurricanes also never lost their lead throughout the matchup. Now being considered as Miami’s biggest win of the year so far, the unranked squad has increased its chances of making the bubble.
With the triumph, Miami now holds an overall record of 19-5 (8-3 ACC), as it is currently the fifth seed in the ACC standings. As for the Tar Heels, they tallied another loss in their campaign, as their record now stands identical to that of the Hurricanes. Miami next faces the NC State Wolfpack on Saturday, Feb. 14, in an attempt to extend its win streak, while UNC will face the Pittsburgh Panthers on the same day.
Hubert Davis Dismisses Any Thought Of His Team Still Hungover From Its Win Over The Duke Blue Devils
On Saturday, Feb. 7, the North Carolina Tar Heels notched a nail-biting victory over their long-term rivals, the Duke Blue Devils, 71-68. With UNC not looking like the team that beat Duke in their game against the Miami Hurricanes, coach Hubert Davis was asked during the post-game press conference if the team was still hungover from the win over Duke, which he dismissed promptly.
“Yeah I just, you know, respectfully, disagree with the hangover from yesterday. I just don’t believe in that, and that wasn’t it. But you are right. The energy effort, the loose balls up in the air, on the ground, Miami was getting them,” Davis said.
