One of the most highly-touted prospects in the upcoming high school hoops class may soon commit to a long-standing collegiate basketball program. On Tuesday, Feb. 3, @recruitsnews on Instagram reported that Long Island Lutheran High School guard Dylan Mingo has received a crystal ball from Hubert Davis and his North Carolina Tar Heels.
Receiving a crystal ball from the UNC program indicates that Mingo has shifted his collegiate hoops recruitment to the Tar Heels. While coach Davis and his North Carolina-based program are the frontrunners to land the scorer, nothing is yet guaranteed, and no official paperwork has been signed by the player. Nevertheless, this is great news for UNC as it plans to rebuild its program.
“ICYMI: 2026 5🌟 Dylan Mingo has received a crystal ball to UNC on @247sports 👀 Future Tar Heel? 🐏,” @recruitsnews on Instagram captioned with a trio of emojis.
Mingo previously had coach Scott Drew and the Baylor Bears’ crystal ball, and reports indicated he would announce his commitment to the Bears in January. The announcement never came, and now Mingo is trending towards committing to UNC instead. Another program that was initially in line to land the standout was the Penn State Nittany Lions.
Mingo, who is in his final year of high school, is ranked nationally as the eighth-best player among all five-star recruits in the class of 2026, per 247Sports.
Dylan Mingo Praised UNC During His Official Visit
Last November, Dylan Mingo made his official visit to the University of North Carolina.
Mingo was interviewed by sports writer Zach Smart of Zags, and he expressed nothing but appreciation for the Tar Heels and the kind of coach he perceives Hubert Davis to be.
“I’m happy to go out there and see the UNC coaches in person for myself and get that experience. Hubert Davis, he’s a good coach. They just made the Final Four a few years ago. They are just talking to me about my development and how I’m going to possibly fit right away as a freshman,” Mingo was quoted as saying.
