Point guard Mario Saint Supery played for the Gonzaga Bulldogs last season. He was expected to stay with them and prepare for Year 2 and become a force to be reckoned with alongside Jack Kayil in the backcourt.
However, in May, Kayil opted to stay in the 2026 draft and ended up being drafted by the New York Knicks with the No. 39 pick. Thus, this decision left coach Mark Few with Mario Saint Supery as the starting point guard.
However, on Saturday, the Gonzaga Bulldogs suffered another massive blow. According to a tweet by analyst Jeff Goodman, Mario Saint Supery made the decision to leave the program and return to Spain to play for EuroLeague squad Valencia.
“Valencia announces that point guard Mario Sain Supery is headed back home to Spain after one season at Gonzaga,” Goodman tweeted. Huge loss for the Zags.”
Jeff Goodman shared a follow-up tweet that Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs were shocked by Supery’s decision to leave the program.
“Been told Gonzaga was shocked by this decision. Saint Supery was practicing with the Zags 24 hours ago.”
Fans flooded social media with comments expressing their disappointment and calling out the point guard for leaving the Zags.
Last season, Mario Saint Supery played in all 35 games for the Gonzaga Bulldogs last season with 17 starts. He averaged 8.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game while the team finished with a 31-4 record. They qualified for March Madness but were eliminated by Texas in the second round.
Mario Saint Supery dedicates social media post to Gonzaga
On Saturday, Mario Saint Supery shared a post on Instagram.
It was a picture of him on the court while repping his Gonzaga jersey. The point guard accompanied it with a caption thanking the program for its support.
“Zag nation, thanks for everything,” Supery wrote.
With the transfer portal closed, Mark Few and Gonzaga have a big task ahead of them in finding a suitable replacement.
