UNC Head Coaching Candidates: John Calipari Linked To Tar Heels Job As Hubert Davis Replacement Still Unclear

Hubert Davis is out as the UNC head coach, and as John Calipari likely knows, the program is looking for its next winner to elevate the program from where it was. Plenty of candidates exist, but only one seemingly makes the most sense to one basketball analyst.

In a Thursday video clip posted by CBS Sports on X via Awful Announcing, basketball analyst Chris Walker pressed the program to go with the well-known Calipari in a glowing statement about his abilities.

“Carolina, you wanna win? Go hire John Calipari,” he said. “If you want it to become what is used to be, every kid wanted to go there. Go hire John Calipari and watch what happens. Forget about all the stuff that you think comes with him. You bring that guy there, the world changes. Forget about NIL, forget about any of this stuff. He is the one guy that transcends everything.”

Calipari’s Razorbacks went 28-9 in the 2025-26 season and secured the No. 4 seed, which was an improvement from his first season in 2024 when his team went 22-14 and earned the No. 10 seed.

Investigating Additional Coaching Candidates for UNC In Addition To John Calipari

While John Calipari was the recommendation made by Walker, plenty of options could exist in addition to the coach.

Gonzaga Bulldogs coach Mark Few is one of the most well-known and successful coaches in college basketball, but has hit a bit of a lull with Gonzaga. It might be time for a change of pace.

Florida coach Todd Golden could also be an option. If enough low-odds calls are made, eventually someone will agree. It could take some cold-calling, a well-thought-out pitch, and a sizeable contribution to a star coach’s retirement fund, but plenty of coaches have left seemingly out of left field. UNC could be the team that pushes.

Additionally, it would be worth placing a call to Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd, who is enjoying the No. 1 seed in the entire tournament. The odds might not be extremely high, but one misses all of the shots they don’t take.
