John Calipari took the Arkansas Razorbacks to back-to-back NCAA Sweet 16 appearances. This was supposed to be the year where Calipari, as a coach, would get over the hump and make a deep NCAA Tournament run with his team.
He joined the Razorbacks in 2024 after a long stint with the Kentucky Wildcats. While he used to be stuck in the Round of 64 and 32 with the Wildcats, Calipari made it to the Sweet 16 in his first season with Arkansas.
His team secured the No. 4 seed this year, and Calipari and Co. seemed on track to make history. The veteran head coach has not been to the Elite Eight since 2019. There was a lot riding on tonight’s game against the Arizona Wildcats.
Arizona took an early lead in the game, putting pressure on the Razorbacks. At the end of the first half, they were leading 54-43, and Calipari’s team had a mighty task on their hands in the second half.
Unfortunately, they couldn’t do anything to close the gap while the Wildcats continued their onslaught. They outscored Arkansas 55-45 in the second half and won the game 109-88.
With this loss, Arkansas’ run in the NCAA Tournament 2026 comes to an end. The frustration was visible on Calipari’s face, long before the final buzzer went off. In the second half, when the Wildcats were leading 78-62, Calipari was seen shouting on top of his lungs toward the refs.
There’s a lot of chatter around Calipari potentially joining the North Carolina Tar Heels. These are just rumors at this point. But the real problem for Calipari is getting past the Sweet 16 round and making an Elite Eight run, regardless of the team that he does it with.
John Calipari is the Key to Success for UNC?
Calipari has had a legendary career spanning decades. Still, like every great coach, he would be interested in a new challenge, something that makes him work extra hard to conquer. UNC could potentially be that challenge for him.
The Tar Heels have struggled in the last few years. This season, they took the first-round exit against the VCU Rams, which led to their head coach, Hubert Davis, being fired. Recently, CBS Sports’ Chris Walker said that UNC should hire Calipari if they want to win games again.
“Carolina, if you want to win, go hire John Calipari,” he said. “If you wanted to become what it used to be, every kid wanted to go there…Go hire John Calipari and watch what happens.”
Walker said that putting Calipari in the head coach position will bring the good old days back for the program.
