John Calipari is one of the finest coaches in college basketball. In fact, his greatness is not confined to just the collegiate level. He has trained some of the most talented players who have gone on and done really well in the NBA. One of them is Tyrese Maxey.
A few other names are Anthony Davis, Devin Booker, Karl-Anthony Towns, John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Bam Adebayo, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Jamal Murray.
Maxey is a product of Calipari’s “one and done” success. He played 31 games in his freshman season at Kentucky under Calipari, averaging 14 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. Maxey was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers as the 21st overall pick in 2020. He has had a decent career so far with 20.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 4.7 assists in 361 games before this season.
However, this season he has been pulling up career-best numbers. In 43 games so far, he is averaging 29.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 6.8 assists. For this, he has earned his first starting spot in the All-Star game. One guy who has always had confidence in his success is John Calipari.
Calipari texted Tyrese Maxey five days before his inclusion in the All-Star game, writing:
“Can you get me your all star jersey so I can hang it?? Proud of you. Love you. Coach.”
John Calipari And Arkansas’ Season So Far
John Calipari has been in the news for more than one reason. Calipari has led Arkansas well so far in 21 games. They are second in the SEC with a 16-5 record. They are on a three-game winning streak. The freshman duo of Darius Acuff Jr. and Meleek Thomas is leading the proceedings for Calipari’s team.
Acuff Jr. is averaging 20.2 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 6.2 assists. His partner, Thomas, is averaging 15.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.9 assists. Apart from Calipari’s team flying lately, he has been very vocal about things that he believes are wrong with college basketball.
He voiced his opinion on teams signing players from the G League and NBA draftees. He was unhappy with Baylor signing James Nnaji and had an outburst about multiple such signings in the college basketball off-late.
