Drake Maye is one of the finest young talents in the NFL right now. The star quarterback plays for the New England Patriots and is set to play in his first Super Bowl next month. However, his involvement in Super Bowl LX may be in peril, as there are reports of his shoulder injury. Drake is not the only star athlete from the Maye family. His elder brother Luke Maye is one of the most dominant players in North Carolina history.
Luka played 141 games in his college career, averaging 9.9 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.6 assists. He is best known for his absolute clutch performance in the 2017 NCAA Elite Eight game. Luke hit the game-winning shot against Kentucky to lead North Carolina into the Final Four.
North Carolina won the national championship in 2017. Luke had a career-high 33 points against NC State. He was a key contributor to North Carolina’s NCAA title run. He was also named South Regional Most Outstanding Player. Ahead of Drake Maye’s potential Super Bowl appearance, another one of Luke’s iconic moments in college basketball was recently revisited.
Mark Jones of ESPN recalled how a Duke player once trash-talked with Luke Maye. The Duke player reportedly said to Luke, “You’re not a 5-star or even a 4-star player.” To this, Luke Maye said, “No, I’m not. But I’m killing a lot of y’all who are.”
However, Duke men’s basketball official Instagram account commented on the post, writing, “Maye was a problem but doubt this was actually said.”
“While Drake Maye prepares for the Super Bowl, never forget the legacy his brother Luke left at UNC. Luke went from a walk-on to a 2x All-ACC selection & 2018 All-American, cementing himself as one of the best to ever wear a Tar Heel jersey,” the post was captioned.
Fans React to Luke Maye’s Impressive Highlights
Fans online loved reminiscing about North Carolina’s clutch player, Luke Maye.
“Always said he was like a mini K-Love,” one fan said.
“LUKE IS A LEGEND,” another fan exclaimed.
“Luke also won a national championship at UNC. Hit one of the biggest shots in UNC history to send us to the Final Four in ’17,” one fan remembered.
“I knew Maye sounded familiar. Dude broke my heart as a Kentucky fan back then. I’ll never forget Malik Monk and Deaaron Fox hitting crazy jumpers to tie the game and then Luke Maye hitting the game-winner at the buzzer. Much respect,” another fan stated.
“I had no clue they were brothers damn bro Luke was a baller too,” another claimed.
“The greatest Maye brother,” one fan commented.
