Amid Tyran Stokes Setback, Kentucky Celebrates Small Win With Tyrese Maxey Post

Top high school prospect Tyran Stokes announced his commitment to the Kansas Jayhawks, dealing a huge blow to the Kentucky Wildcats, who failed in their pursuit. However, Wildcats alumnus Tyrese Maxey gave them a reason to celebrate amid the recruiting setback.

Maxey led the Philadelphia 76ers to an important Game 7 win against the Boston Celtics to advance to the second round of the NBA playoffs. In the thrilling 109-100 win, Maxey scored 30 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and recorded seven assists. He supported center Joel Embiid, who finished with 34 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 assists.

Kentucky’s X account posted a graphic of Maxey with his stats to celebrate the accomplishment of its former star.

“Game seven @TyreseMaxey was UNLEASHED 🔥🔥” the post was captioned.

Maxey scored crucial buckets in the final minutes, continuing with the series-long trend of stepping up under pressure. The guard scored eight points in the final two minutes, slamming the door on Boston’s comeback.

Maxey played one season at Kentucky under head coach John Calipari in 2019-20. He was a 5-star recruit and a top-10 prospect nationally coming out of high school. In his only season, the former freshman averaged 14.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. He helped Kentucky win the SEC regular-season championship and was named to the All-SEC Second Team and SEC All-Freshman Team. In the 2021 NBA draft, he was selected 21st overall by the 76ers.

Mark Pope’s Kentucky Receives Low Ranking After Failed Recruitments

Kentucky head coach Mark Pope could not secure a single top-20 prospect recruit in the offseason, leaving the Wildcats’ roster filled with transfer portal players on top of some returning figures and freshman Mason Williams.

After Tyran Stokes chose Kansas over Kentucky and Oregon, Pope’s program was ranked 12th in the SEC by popular hoops analyst Bart Torvik.

Among all the recruits, the Wildcats were really hoping to sign Stokes and Donnie Freeman, but both committed elsewhere. Pope would hope to prove Torvik’s projections wrong once the season begins.
