Who Is Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje? Know More About Duke’s Latest 16-Year-Old Recruit from Spain

The Duke Blue Devils, coached by Jon Scheyer, have just secured the commitment of an internationally known prospect, Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje, in the current offseason of college basketball for next season.

On Thursday, the Blue Devils’ official social media pages announced that Spanish center Joaquim has committed to the Durham, North Carolina-based program for his first year come the 2026-27 campaign.

Boumtje Boumtje is one of the top centers of the FC Barcelona youth program in Spain. The young stalwart is rated five stars by recruiting entities everywhere and has yet to even turn 17. Boumtje Boumtje will turn 17 this month, which is likely one of the aspects that persuaded Scheyer and his recruiting staff to pursue him since he has untapped potential at such an early age.

Another intangible that Boumtje Boumtje possesses that may have played a factor towards his recruitment is that he is 7-feet tall, and still has room to grow, given his age. Along with his age, Boumtje Boumtje will actually be required to play at least two years of college basketball before he has any plans of declaring for the NBA Draft.

Experience-wise, Boumtje Boumtje plays in the youth program of FC Barcelona, where he most recently played in the Barca Liga U in the 2025-26 season. The incoming freshman is said to have played for the aforementioned squad’s senior team since he was promoted to that distinction at the start of the said season. Boumtje Boumtje now hopes that the experience playing with FC Barcelona can help him in NCAA college basketball.

Boumtje Boumtje joins a Duke squad that recently finished the 2025-26 season with an overall record of 35-3 (17-1 ACC), and was the top seed coming out of the 2026 ACC standings. The Blue Devils then went all the way to the Elite Eight of this year’s national tournament, where they lost through a heartbreaking three-pointer that eliminated them from the postseason, 73-72.
