College basketball insider Seth Davis believes that Rainier Beach High School forward Tyran Stokes‘ recent social media post indicates that he’ll be joining coach Bill Self’s Kansas Jayhawks.
On Wednesday, coach Self announced through a heartfelt letter on the Jayhawks’ official social media platforms that he intends to stay with his program for the 2026-27 college basketball season.
Stokes posted a single ‘surprise’ emoji on his X/Twitter account. Davis reposted Stokes’ upload and wondered whether Stokes will be joining the Jayhawks since Self is confirmed to be back with the team. So far, Stokes’ top three destinations are Kansas, the Oregon Ducks, and the Kentucky Wildcats. But Self’s recent decision may shift that in favor of the Jayhawks.
“Thinking on the grapevine is that Self coming back means Stokes is going to be a Jayhawk,” Davis shared.
For now, Stokes’ focus remains on finishing his high school hoops tenure strongly at Rainier Beach as the No. 1-ranked prospect among all five-star recruits in his class. Meanwhile, the Kansas-based program will look to bounce back with Self back in the fray after its premature exit in this year’s national tournament. The Jayhawks were eliminated in the second round by coach Rick Pitino’s St. John’s Red Storm, 67-65.
Tyran Stokes’ Says Factors Out Of His Control Affect His Decision
For quite some time now, Tyran Stokes’ decision of where he wants to play college basketball is one of the most followed stories in the sport.
Given that it has taken the young talent significant time to commit to a program, he said that factors out of his control, such as staff changes and the portal, affect his decision-making.
“Like I said, it will probably happen after some time. I don’t know, how can I put this. I’m not going to say that I’m not focused on it, but there’s things that are happening with the coaches, the portal, players, so obviously I have to be aware of that. I don’t want to jump into a situation, and oh something happens right when I commit. So being able to just, I’m not saying I’m waiting on certain things, I just want to see what happens and see what plays out before I jump into it,” Stokes was quoted as saying during an interview with writer Eric Bossi on 247Sports.
