How Did TCU Beat Ohio State in March Madness? Breaking Down the Stunning Upset

No. 9 TCU walked into Greenville, South Carolina, with a point to prove, and that’s exactly what they did. The Horned Frogs took down No. 8 Ohio State in a first-round thriller, with every twist and turn that makes March Madness exciting.

With a dominant first half, a second-half that felt like a collapse for the Horned Frogs, and a buzzer-beating finish, this game is something that will live rent-free in college hoop fans’ heads for a while.

However, this win was anything but easy. TCU seemed to be cruising through the first half, but by the second half, the game seemed over for them. Here’s a full breakdown of the key moments that contributed to this upset.

Key Moments That Helped TCU Upset Ohio State

TCU came out firing from beyond the arc, going 7-of-13 in the first half and building a 39-24 lead at the break. This 15-point cushion looked comfortable enough as they headed to the locker room. However, the real action awaited them in the second half.

After the break, TCU shot just 9-of-28 overall and 2-of-10 from three in the final 20 minutes. Ohio State went on an 11-1 run to take a 55-50 lead with 6:19 remaining. This could have been a real slip-up for the Horned Frogs on the biggest stage of college basketball.

However, Ohio State couldn’t hold on to its lead. The Buckeyes made just one of their last seven shots from the field down the stretch, and TCU used the slump to their advantage. Xavier Edmonds hit the go-ahead basket with just 4.1 seconds remaining to seal a 66-64 victory. Ohio State called its final timeout, but Bruce Thornton’s desperate half-court heave at the buzzer never reached the rim.

Edmonds finished with 16 points, and Micah Robinson led all scorers with 18. David Punch added 16 points and 13 rebounds. For Ohio State, all five starters scored at least 10, with John Mobley Jr. leading the team with 15 points and six assists. However, when it came down to the final possessions, TCU emerged as the dominant team.
