Mark Pope joined the Kentucky Wildcats in 2024 following head coaching stints with the Utah Valley Wolverines and the BYU Cougars. Pope took the Wildcats to the Sweet 16 in his first season.
The Wildcats finished 21-13 in his second season. They’ve made the NCAA Tournament bracket, but the Wildcats are still looking for a great season with Pope at the helm.
Kentucky can make giant strides next season if it signs five-star prospect Christian Collins, who is reportedly set to announce his college commitment on Tuesday.
The star power forward is one of the best players in the upcoming class and has multiple offers on the table. Louisville, Kentucky, and USC are in the running to sign the McDonald’s All-American.
Pope already has a good roster to work with, but losing 13 games this season, including 8 in the SEC, shows that they’re still missing a few pieces. Could Collins be what they’ve been looking for?
The Wildcats need to work on several areas of their game. They lack a good three-point defense, they need more efficient shooting, and they need a great rebounder, someone with a dominant presence on the court.
Collins checks most of those boxes. The 6’8, 200 lbs forward is known for his versatile, three-level scoring. With a 7’1 wingspan, he can guard at multiple positions, and his versatility allows him to switch according to the needs of the team. Collins is also an effective playmaker, which makes him the right fit for the Wildcats.
Matt Dunn Said Christian Collins is a Hard Worker
Collins is from St. John Bosco in California. That’s where he has developed his skills to become one of the best players in his class. Now, he’s going to move up and be a part of a college program that’s best suited for him.
As per St. John Bosco coach Matt Dunn, the five-star prospect is a hard worker and deserves all the credit for the reputation he has earned. Dunn heaped praise on him during a conversation with KSR+ in October.
“First of all, he’s an incredibly hard worker. He gets all the credit,” he said. “Of course, he continues to get more skilled and more comfortable using that skill. To me, the biggest growth has been in his understanding of the game and his reading of defenses.”
Dunn stated that Collins has grown a lot as a player. He is no longer just a great scorer, as he has developed other aspects of his game to become a complete player.
