Drake released his highly anticipated album titled ‘Iceman’ on May 15, and as expected, he had a lot to get off his chest. The 39-year-old took a lot of names, said a lot of things, and gave Stephen Curry a special shoutout on the album.
Drake and Curry have been longtime friends. Over the years, the rap superstar has given several shoutouts to the four-time NBA Champ. But their relationship goes beyond mutual admiration and friendship.
During an appearance on 360 With Speedy, Curry revealed that they’re like family and detailed the connection with Drake’s camp.
“We go way back, though,” he said. “It’s actually kind of a family thing, too. One of Ayesha’s cousins, she’s from Toronto and the whole deal, so we’re from the same boat.”
On track 13 of ‘Iceman’ titled ‘2 Hard 4 The Radio’, Drake gave a shoutout to Curry and the Davidson Wildcats.
“Back when they was askin’ ’bout where Davidson was at / Now everybody got a blue thirty on they back.”
Drake was referring to how Curry was an overlooked prospect due to his size and lack of athleticism. Davidson was a small school with little to no national recognition. When Curry joined the program, “where Davidson was at,” was a frequently asked question.
Only six NBA players have come from Davidson, and Curry is the only active player from the school. Before Curry (in 2009), Brandon Williams (in 1997) was the last player to make it to the NBA.
Now, the NBA superstar has brought global recognition to the program. The “blue thirty on they back” line refers to the iconic Warriors jersey with blue #30 on the back and how people around the world wear Curry’s jersey. Curry holds the highest-selling jersey record in the league, leading the official global merchandise sales through NBA stores and other affiliated platforms.
Drake Referenced Other Athletes on Iceman
Drake gave shoutouts to Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, Gilbert Arenas, Michael Jordan, Kevin Durant, and others. While these people received shoutouts, LeBron James got some subliminal jabs.
“I shouldn’t even be shocked to see you in that arena, because you always made your career off of switching teams up,” Drake said on ‘Make Them Remember.’
“Please stop askin’ about what’s goin’ on with 23 and me / I’m a real n***a and he’s not, it’s in my DNA.”
Drake and James used to be good friends as well, but since James’ appearance at ‘The Pop Out’ concert in 2024, their friendship has seemingly ended.
