The Seton Hall Pirates finished fourth in the Big East with a 21-12 overall record and 10-1 in the conference. They won one game in the Big East Tournament against the Creighton Bluejays.
Their Big East Tournament run came to an end against the St John’s Red Storm as they lost 78-68. Was a decent season and a short-lived conference title run enough to put the Seton Hall Pirates in the March Madness bracket?
While the committee’s decision is yet to come out, the Pirates are likely not going to make March Madness this year. They are not projected to make the NCAA Tournament field in most Selection Sunday projections.
If the Pirates end up not making the list, it’ll be the first time in program history that the team failed to make the bracket despite 21 wins in the season. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi has listed Seton Hall in the ‘Next Four Out’ bracket in his latest rankings.
There are various reasons why the Seton Hall Pirates are likely to miss the March Madness bracket. There’s no denying that 21 wins on the sheet look good for any team, but it’s the quality of wins that matters at this stage of the season.
The Seton Hall Pirates won just one of seven games against Quad 1 opponents this season. They have a NET ranking of 54 due to the poor quality of their wins and losses against good teams.
Their only Quad 1 win was against NC State. If they had a few more of those on their resume this season, we’d be having a different conversation about the Pirates right now.
Seton Hall Head Coach on His COTY Win
The Seton Hall Pirates camp will have mixed feelings about their season. On one hand, they accumulated 21 wins, but on the other, they’ll likely miss the March Madness bracket. Even in what eventually will be considered a disappointing run, their coach, Shaheen Holloway, bagged his first Big East Coach of the Year award.
Upon receiving the award, Holloway said it doesn’t belong to him alone, as he shares it with the entire Seton Hall community.
“You know, obviously, after last year, a tough season, this year, the coaching staff, the managers, the training staff, and obviously the players, spent so much time believing in me, believing in my vision, putting up with me… And I’m not easy to put up with—you know, I’m very demanding,” he said.
Holloway became only the fourth coach in Seton Hall history to win the Big East Coach of the Year title.
