Richard Pitino’s Xavier Musketeers suffered an 87-82 defeat against his father, Rick Pitino’s St. John’s Red Storm, on Monday. The game was decided in overtime, and there was one moment in the game that brought out the angry side in Pitino Jr.
FOX College Hoops captured Richard smashing his hand on the drawing board during what appears to be a timeout situation. According to Fox College Hoops, Richard was not happy with a referee’s call in the overtime loss. As many as three players of Xavier were fouled out in overtime, leaving the head coach frustrated and becoming part of a viral moment during the timeout.
The game saw the lead change hands 15 times. Rick Pitino’s St. John’s took control early, but Xavier battled back. Tre Carroll finished with 21 points and eight rebounds and kept Xavier competitive throughout the game. The regulation ended in a tie after Red Storm’s Oziyah Sellers tipped in his own miss with roughly 16 seconds left.
St. John’s Zuby Ejiofor scored six points in overtime and finished the game with 25 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, playing a big hand in the overtime victory. Richard Pitino Reveals Reason for Defeat to Dad Rick as Crash Out Over Refs Goes Viral
It appears Richard Pitino was not happy with what unfolded at halftime. Three of his players had to exit the game because of being fouled out. Moreover, the team missed crucial free throws down the stretch. After the game, Richard said their team deserved to win.
“We should have won the game, you know,” Richard said. “The free-throw line decided it. I’ll go back and watch, not blaming the refs, but when you have three guys foul out, you still had a chance to win it. I’m proud of the effort. They’re great kids. I really believe in what we’re building. We’re obviously trying to get to the level of UConn, trying to get to the level of St. John’s, but you can’t have 28 free throws to nine and think you’re going to win the game. We had a chance.”
On the other hand, Richard Pitino’s father, Rick Pitino, registered his 904th career on-court win, moving him past Roy Williams into third place all-time in Division I coaching victories.
