It could have been an incredible night for Otega Oweh, who scored a career-high 29 points against Auburn on Saturday night. He paced his team in the first half with 12 points and hit a three-pointer from the deep to lift Kentucky to a 39-35 lead at the break. Unfortunately, the Wildcats fell short by a point to grab the win, falling 75-74.
After the game, Oweh seemed quite disgruntled with the officiating done by the referees, which he believes cost Kentucky the game. Posting a story on Instagram, Oweh wrote,
“These refs gon do it every time.”
The post was perhaps directed toward a foul that was called on Kentucky’s Collin Chandler during a critical moment in the game. Kentucky was up 1 point with a few seconds remaining and was set to inbound the ball. Further, they assumed an Auburn foul was incoming and thus would have attempted to make it a 3-point game. However, there was no guarantee that Kentucky would have won or made those free throws, but it could have given them an easy 2 or 3-point lead that they could have protected.
Collin Chandler was then called for a push-off against Auburn’s Kevin Overton, who fell to the ground while fighting for position. Wildcats fans accuse Overton of flopping and holding Chandler before the foul was called.
Nevertheless, the call was made, and Auburn had an easy chance to win. After Keyshawn Murphy missed a shot, Auburn’s Elyjah Freeman made the game-winning score to help Auburn with the dub. This was one of the most intense matchups in college basketball so far this season.
Now, it seems like the Wildcats’ road to March Madness might be in peril. They have lost 3 games straight and are yet to play Florida, Texas A&M, and Vanderbilt to close the season. Currently, Kalshi estimates a 95% chance for Kentucky to reach the postseason. However, this can only hold if they win all of their games coming ahead for a deep postseason run.
Mark Pope was Livid Over Controversial Foul Call on Kentucky
It wasn’t just Otega Oweh who was frustrated after the loss against Auburn. Kentucky head coach Mark Pope also spoke on the controversial on Kentucky. Though Pope did not publicly criticize the officials, he did make sure to his disgruntlement on the same.
“We don’t make excuses. We don’t do that,” Pope said. “Regardless of how disgraceful things are, we don’t give away our power…regardless of how embarrassing, personal, awful, unacceptable.”
However, Pope was also heard speaking loudly to Kentucky MD Mitch Barnhart about the call and seemed quite livid. As per Sports Illustrated, he said,
“Mitch, if those MFers (the SEC) try to fine me, screw them. I didn’t say a word about how they cheated us.”
Kentucky now has a long road to go for making it to the postseason. So, will they be able to cross the finish line after all these hurdles? It would be interesting to find out.
