Mark Pope and Kentucky are under a lot of pressure, especially after last season. One of the biggest talking points in the last season of college basketball was how Kentucky basketball would perform. Mark Pope had a lot of expectations on him with a strong squad. However, things did not pan out the way Pope and the Wildcats had hoped.
The disappointment from last season has continued in the ongoing offseason, as Kentucky missed out on a star player after weeks of speculation. Rob Wright III has decided to return to BYU and has officially rejected Mark Pope’s team. NCAA analyst Jeff Goodman commented on this major failure.
“I mean, first of all, they don’t have the money they had last year. There’s not the disparity they had last year. But forget about that. They’ve got enough money. It’s not like they don’t have enough money to get players. They do. As I told you months ago about Kentucky, what did they need to do that they did not do, Rob? What do they need to do?” Goodman asked.
“A GM,” co-host Rob answered.
Goodman continued:
“Correct. Correct. This was absolutely ludicrous. You have all that money devoted to a GM that can have plan A, plan B, plan C, who’s talking to all these agents every single day. Not your assistant coaches. Not your assistant coaches that are having to deal with this and coach the team. So, they brought in a young guy, I don’t know, three weeks ago, four weeks. It’s too late. It’s too late for this year. So, Mark Pope has to do a lot of this. And guess what? like Mark Pope has to coach that team.”X2
“That should be 90% of his focus as he goes into January, February, and March. So, I think that was their number one mistake to be honest. And again, you got to know who you can get, who you can’t get. Every agent, you got to be ultra prepared. And I’m not sure they were they were ultra prepared, but they’re not alone,” Goodman said.
He then compared situations of Duke, Kansas with Kentucky and how all three rosters look bleak,” he Goodman added.“So, the difference these days is the name does not mean nearly as much as it did a year, two years, certainly five, 10 years ago, but even a year or two ago. Now, let’s face it, these agents, they’re telling these kids, ‘Go get paid. Go get paid.’ They’re not looking for fit. They don’t care about the place as much as they do about the money in most cases. Not all the agents, but in most of them,” he concluded.
Mark Pope and Kentucky’s disappointing season
Last season’s NIL spending went over $22 million, which was considered an optimistic approach for the season.
With additions of Jasper Johnson, Malachi Moreno, Jaland Lowe, Jayden Quaintance, Kam Williams, Braydon Hawthorne, and Anrija Jelavic, the team looked strong on paper but not so much on the court. Kentucky was eliminated in the second round of the NCAA Tournament against Iowa State.
The end of the season was disappointing for the fans. Mark Pope had to deal with a bunch of injuries to almost all his key players. But still, the amount of NIL investment did not satisfy the expectations of the fans.
