After one season at BYU, Aleksej Kostić is entering the transfer portal, likely in search of further play time. During his freshman year, the Austrian saw significant play time off the bench, but only started in five of the 27 games he played.
In the 2025-26 season, the native of Pfaffstätten, Austria, recorded 4.4 points, 0.9 rebounds, and 0.4 assists per game. His field goal percentage was 36.8%. Expect to see him move to a non-Power Five program in which he will be able to develop as a player for at least a year, possibly two, before attempting to close his college career at a top program.
That being said, while his priority is to find a program where he can get significant play time, that doesn’t have to mean joining a struggling school. Here are a series of options that would serve him well, with the last two being places where he could even compete for silverware.
Top 3 Landing Spots for Aleksej Kostić
#3 Davidson Wildcats
Kostić’s play style, from his time in the Austrian league, fits the Wildcats’ offensive philosophy built around three-point shooting and “positionless” guards. Davidson would be a place where the former BYU player would almost be guaranteed to start, but it would be a significant drop in the quality of the school. Last season, the Wildcats had a 20-14 overall record and finished sixth in the Atlantic 10. They also fell in the first round of the NIT.
#2 Saint Mary’s Gaels
Saint Mary’s has a knack for recruiting international players and turning them into bona fide starters before a final season at Power Five schools. They could get a couple of good seasons from Aleksej Kostić before he decides to move to another school again.
It’s also a much better program than Davidson, having been the West Coast Conference regular season co-champions last season and making it to the NCAA Tournament.
#1 Utah Aggies
This move would allow Kostić to remain in the state in which he has become used to living for the past year. When talking about international players, there’s an underrated aspect to stability when in a new country. It’s also the kind of competent non-Power Five school where he could be a recurring starter.
The Aggies come from a season in which they won the Mountain West regular and tournament titles, and made it to the second round of March Madness. It would be a terrific destination for Kostić.
