Rob Wright III will stay put at BYU for the time being, as he has withdrawn from the transfer portal after almost transferring to the Kentucky Wildcats.
Jeff Goodman speculated whether Tyran Stokes, the five-star recruit heavily linked with Mark Pope’s Wildcats, may have had anything to do with Wright’s decision.
On an episode of “Field of 68,” Goodman questioned whether Wright’s desire to be the No. 1 option on a team played a role in his deciding to stay at BYU.
“He is decided to go back to BYU, and now kind of be the guy you know. Where if he had gone to Kentucky, the other thing was like, does he play with Tyran Stokes? Does he have to do this thing all over again? That he did this year with AJ Dybantsa, who is a good teammate by the way… AJ is pretty easy to deal with, as a teammate… I think it was comfortability as much as anything for Rob Wright,” said Goodman.
He also said that Stokes is very demanding of his teammates during games, which might have put off Wright from the idea of playing at Kentucky.
BYU’s Kevin Young on the return of Rob Wright for the 2026-27 season
Shortly after the announcement of Rob Wright’s return to the BYU Cougars, head coach Kevin Young released a statement about the player’s decision.
“Rob is the best point guard in college basketball. He is poised to lead our team as the floor general and help be an extension of our staff. I’m looking forward to continuing to coach Rob and help him develop his game,” Young wrote in a written statement after Wright announced his return.
Young had a fairly successful first season at BYU after transferring from Baylor after his freshman year. In 2026, he earned Third Team All-Big 12 honors while averaging 18.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game. He will likely be the school’s leading player in the 2026-27 season.
