“Michigan Peaked Early”: Dusty May Faces Fans’ Wrath As Wolverines Lose Big Ten Championship To Matt Painter’s Purdue

The Michigan Wolverines, coached by Dusty May, are getting criticized by fans because of their recent disappointing performance. On Sunday, March 15, coach May and his Wolverines faced coach Matt Painter’s Purdue Boilermakers on neutral grounds, the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, in the 2026 Big Ten conference tournament championship game.

Unfortunately for the Wolverines faithful, though, as pointed out by the team’s official social media pages, the Michigan-based program lost to Purdue by eight points, 80-72, missing out on a conference tourney title. The hotly-contested affair was knotted all up in the first half, but the Boilermakers held on to a steady lead en route to the win in the second period.

College basketball fans believe the Wolverines used up all of their energy in the regular season.

“I think Michigan peaked early 😂,” one fan claimed with a laughing emoji.

“Biggest losers and frauds in the country. They’re 100% getting exposed in the tourney,” another user exclaimed.

“If this same team and refs show up next week, you won’t make it out of the Sweet 16.  Blown away by what I saw today,” another fan said.

“That was an absolutely pathetic showing. Zero defense and they shot like they were blind,” a user shared.

Other X users believe that coach May and company can still get it done come March Madness, as the loss was their stepping stone to success.

“All good, it just wasn’t meant to be. Let’s win the big one,” one fan wrote.

“Purdue was the better team today. I’m not worried but we got a lot to clean up before the tournament. The offense just isn’t the same without Cason. Let’s rest up and win the natty! #GoBlue,” another fan posted.

“Not a fan of how that game was called but that’s not a reason to say why we lost. Rebounding and our defense down low was bad. Meaningless game outside of a banner, sucks but time for the real thing 〽️,” a fan explained.

Despite losing out on their conference’s postseason title, the Wolverines are still banking on the fact that they were this year’s Big Ten regular season champions with an overall record of 29-2 (19-1 Big Ten), as they were originally the first seed heading into the postseason. For now, Michigan’s goal remains to win the 2026 national championship, as they are still likely to be a part of the postseason.

The Michigan Wolverines Last Won The National Title Back In 1989

As it currently stands, the last time that the Michigan Wolverines won the NCAA championship was almost four decades ago in 1989.

Since then, the closest the Michigan-based program ever got to reaching the college basketball mountaintop was as a runner-up finish, which they did four times. The most recent one of these runner-up finishes came in 2018.
