Dusty May’s Michigan Wolverines have looked invincible at times this season. The number one seed in the Big Ten, the Wolverines are 29-2 overall and 19-1 in the conference.
They also have a perfect record in away games this season after 11 matchups. May joined the team in 2024, when the Wolverines were struggling. In the 2023-24 season, they were at the bottom of the table with just three wins in the conference and 17 losses.
May brought them to a tie for the second seed in 2024 and the number-one seed this season. That’s a giant leap made by the program under May’s guidance, but the Wolverines head coach isn’t done yet.
He’s still working toward adding more strength to his team. As per Jamie Shaw, King Gibson, a five-star guard, recently went on an unofficial visit to Michigan and NC State. Alabama, Arkansas, and Baylor are also in the race.
After his visit to Michigan, Gibson described his experience. After attending a game, he concluded that Michigan provides a great environment. Since he attended a rivalry game, Gibson had the peak fan experience.
“It was a great environment. I was there for the Michigan State game, so you know it was a big rivalry, so a lot of people were there. The crowd was crazy, and it just felt different out there,” he said.
Gibson didn’t get to talk to May during his visit, but he witnessed how the Michigan coach pumps up his players before and during games.
“He had his guys up and ready for the game, so he pumped them up and motivated them well. They do a lot of things through their guards…He lets the guards run the whole show, but their bigs also play a lot into what they do, so it’s a lot of two-man games with lobs and pops and stuff like that,” he added.
Gibson has had several conversations with John Calipari’s Arkansas, but he has yet to visit their campus.
King Gibson Detailed His Playing Style
Gibson stated that he’s a versatile player who isn’t limited to a few things on the floor. He can run the offense, shoot, score, and defend. He said he’s still improving his shooting, even though he’s made a lot of progress from previous years.
Gibson revealed that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Ja Morant, and Anthony Edwards are three of his favorite players.
“I watch a lot of Shai (Gilgeous-Alexander), and a lot of Anthony Edwards and Ja Morant. I like Shai and his pace, just the way he controls his team and goes out there to handle his business every time. With Ant, it’s just his demeanor, how he comes into the game and gets to his pull-up and middies. Ja is just such an athletic guard, and he can score it in so many ways,” he said.
Gibson is the No. 6 overall player in the Rivals 2027 class.
