Michigan Wolverines coach Dusty May recently admitted that he taunted Michigan State Spartans fans during their previous regular-season game. Back on Jan. 30, May and his Wolverines team went up against coach Tom Izzo’s Michigan State Spartans on the latter’s home court, the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Michigan.
On Monday, March 2, sports analyst Colin Cowherd shared a clip from a recent interview he did with May on his show’s X/Twitter account. In the clip, Cowherd asked May about his viral moment during the aforementioned game, where he was silently taunting the opposing home crowd. May revealed that he did it intentionally, adding that he grew up doing such acts.
“ Yeah, Colin, it’s completely, I’m completely out of how I am by nature when I’m coaching now. I’m a small, fiery Irish guy that probably got in more fights growing up than I had easy days. And once I got into coaching and had a family, I basically just left all that behind and became a borderline pacifist. So now I just, when people have road rage, I just kind of shrug it off,” May said.
“If people get mad in the line, I just shrug it off and let them go in front of me. So if a bunch of 18 to 22-year-olds who were probably overserved beginning of 8:00 AM want to yell and scream obscenities at me, let ’em go ahead,” he continued.
Luckily for May and the rest of the Wolverines faithful, they ended up defeating the Spartans in away territory by 12 points, 83-71. Currently, the Michigan-based program holds an overall record of 27-2 (17-1) and is the No. 1 seed in the 2026 Big Ten conference standings. The Spartans will have the opportunity to try and get vengeance against the Wolverines in their next matchup on Sunday, March 8.
Dusty May Says Taunting Is Part Of The Game, Admits He Enjoyed It
In the same interview with Colin Cowherd, as he explained his Irish background of being taught how to effectively taunt, Dusty May admitted that he actually enjoyed taunting the Michigan State Spartans crowd.
For May, this is all a part of the game of basketball, and he asserted that no matter what they do, it won’t get to his head.
“ It’s all part of the game. I enjoy watching European basketball and the stuff that goes on with that. So, I think it’s part of it. There’s nothing any of those people can say that’s gonna get a rise out of me. So, yes, in a way, I did enjoy it. But just for the fact that those kids are never gonna be able to get under my skin,” May shared.
