The upcoming matchup between Michigan and Duke at Washington is being billed as a potential preview of the National Championship. No.1 Michigan and No.3 Duke’s matchup is one of those rare February non-conference matchups that features two projected No.1 seeds and arguably the two most complete rosters in the country. So, how will this matchup pan out? Let’s find out.
Michigan vs. Duke Prediction
Both Michigan and Duke are two of the most elite defenses in the nation. Michigan has the No. 1-ranked adjusted defensive efficiency as per Ken Pom, anchored by rim protectors Aday Mara and Yaxel Lendeborg. On the other hand, Duke’s defense ranks No.5 nationally, led by their versatile freshman sensation Cameron Boozer. Boozer, who is averaging 22.8 PPG this season, will have to fight his way in finding success against Lendeborg, who holds the highest individual defensive rating in college basketball.
Michigan plays an incredibly high-tempo basketball which seeks to overwhelm opponents with depth and transition scoring. On the other hand, Duke shows calculation and control, prioritizing ball security, which is evident from their leading the ACC in assist-to-turnover ratio. If Michigan can force a track meet, its superior bench depth could wear Duke down. In hindsight, if Duke keeps it in half-court, a disciplined execution could give them the edge.
Michigan’s size and bulk in the frontcourt are something Duke might find to struggle with. Though Boozer is the best individual scorer on the floor, Michigan’s balanced attack featuring five players in double figures makes it harder to defend against them for 40 minutes. At a neutral-site like Washington, expect a Final-Four-like environment with Michigan’s defensive pressure eventually forcing Duke into a few costly late-game turnovers. ESPN’s matchup predictor estimates a 51.3% chance for Duke and 48.7% chance for Michigan to clinch this matchup.
