The UCLA Bruins have not been performing as well as fans had hoped, and during that loss to the Michigan State Spartans, head coach Mike Cronin raised some eyebrows for blowing his lid and ejecting redshirt senior Steven Jamerson II before the referees could even review the tape of an alleged foul.
Soon enough, Cronin issued an apology, which was soon posted by the school’s MBB X account:
Despite this apology, Fox Sports analyst Colin Cowherd is not buying it, saying that Bruins fans would not accept this and that the apology itself did not feel heartfelt.
“Let’s keep it 💯, Bruins are 9-6 in BIG, so their fans won’t accept this. If they were 14-1, it would be called heartfelt and authentic.” Cowherd wrote.
Steve Jamerson II was reportedly given a Flagrant 1 when he tried to block Michigan State’s Carson Cooper as he tried to duck, but this soon ended up with Cooper crashing to the floor. It was ultimately ruled unintentional as it was Cooper’s momentum combined by Jameson’s contact that sent him to the floor. However, as officials were still trying to assess if it was indeed a Flagrant 1, Cronin ejected Jameson back to the locker room.
Mike Cronin Had Testy Exchange With Reporters After Michigan State Loss
To make things more complicated for Mike Cronin, he also had a testy exchange with reporters during the postgame, and it came about as the student section at the Breslin Center was taunting Xavier Booker, who transferred to UCLA from Michigan State this season. Cronin was asked about that, and his reply raised eyebrows:
“I could give a rat’s *ss about the other team’s student section,” he said. “I would like to give you kudos for the worst question I’ve ever been asked.”
Another reporter chimed in, but Cronin ignored him and continued ranting:
“You really think I care about the other team’s student section?”
This was the latest outburst from the coach, who has gotten a bit of a reputation for being combative not just with reporters, but also with his own players.
