There is something going on with Kansas Jayhawks freshman star Darryn Peterson, who was the No. 1 recruit from the Class of 2025 and head coach Bill Self’s star guard.
On Wednesday, the Jayhawks defeated the Oklahoma State Cowboys on the road, but Peterson just played 19 minutes and asked to be subbed out because he was hurt. This raised many eyebrows, as Bill Self himself was surprised with his star’s early exit.
The question now is, will Darryn Peterson play today? While speaking to reporters, Bill Self implied that the star freshman guard will be suiting up against the Cincinnati Bearcats on Saturday.
“He can’t get enough of ball,” Self told reporters.
This still does not guarantee that Darryn Peterson will be playing against the Bearcats. However, the Jayhawks have already released their availability report ahead of the game, and it does not list Darryn Peterson as among those not playing.
The team may be missing forward Samis Calderon, who had been listed as questionable, and he may be a gametime decision.
This may show that the freshman guard, who many believe would be a one-and-done for Kansas, will be playing. Whether or not Peterson will be leaving early due to injury again is an entirely different matter.
Darryn Peterson Had Been Dealing With A Laundry List of Injuries Before Cincinnati Game
While Darryn Peterson had been hyped as a possible No. 1 draft pick, his freshman year had not gone as planned as he had suffered injury after injury. These injuries ranged from a hamstring injury to an ankle injury and even an illness. Bill Self addressed that they need to change things to address this.
“The bottom line is, there is a way to change the narrative,” he said. “Play. Finish. Now, if his body allows him to, fantastic. If it doesn’t allow him to, they’ll say something again the next game. That’s the way to get people to quit talking. It’s not me saying it’s not fair. I don’t think that really keeps anybody from having an opinion on it at a national level, or on this level, or any level, to be quite candid.”
For now, many are already questioning Peterson’s desire to play, including Stephen A. Smith and Kendrick Perkins. They have said that while the talent is there, they question if he actually wants to play for Kansas.
