Mark Pope is still looking for the missing piece of the puzzle. He joined the Kentucky Wildcats program as a head coach in 2024. In two seasons so far, Pope has a 46-26 overall record, including 20-16 in the conference.
The Wildcats have made the NCAA Tournament bracket both years under Pope, but they haven’t been able to make a deep run. In the first season, they made it to the Sweet 16. This year, they were eliminated from the Round of 32.
With the NCAA transfer portal set to open on Tuesday, Pope will get another opportunity to add more depth to his team for the next season. There are plenty of options for him, but some of them are more likely to commit than others.
Kwame Evans Jr., a five-star recruit, will be one of the names that the Kentucky Wildcats will keep a close eye on. The 6’10 power forward has been with the Oregon Ducks since 2023. This year, he averaged 13.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1.3 blocks, and 1 steal per game.
He recently told KSR+ that he hasn’t scheduled a virtual meeting or a campus visit for Kentucky yet. However, there is some genuine interest from Evans Jr. regarding possibly being a part of the Wildcats program.
Mark Pope knows that his frame, athleticism, and last season’s numbers are highly beneficial for his team. It’ll be interesting to see how long it takes for Evans Jr. to set up a campus visit to Kentucky because he will also have a lot of options on the table.
Mark Pope on What Went Wrong This Season
Mark Pope’s Kentucky Wildcats lost the SEC Tournament 63-71 to the Florida Gators. They won one game in the NCAA Tournament, 89-84 against the Santa Clara Broncos. Then they faced the Iowa State Cyclones in the second round, which ended their run.
After the NCAA Tournament loss, Pope spoke on what went wrong for his program this season. He raised several points during the press conference, hinting at some of the things he needed to go back and work on.
“We didn’t get to play the way that we planned to,” he said. “We didn’t get to play with the personnel we planned to. And all of that changed. I think our guys raised up and they made the very, very best of a complicated, difficult situation roster-wise and health-wise, and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
There was also a lot of pressure on Pope following the loss. Some fans wanted him to leave Kentucky. As of now, there are no signs of the Wildcats wanting to part ways with the head coach.
