Dan Hurley has revealed another thing that isn’t really a superstition, but something he did both times when the Huskies reached the finals in 2023 and 2024. And they won the championship on both occasions.
“Doing it two years in a row and then missing it a year, it kind of all feels new. But I think just that feeling of being one of the last two teams standing, just taking that last bus ride on Monday, is going to be like an emotional ride over to the stadium. Because you’re just so proud of your group. There’s a lot of honor in being one of the last two teams standing,” Hurley said.
Then, talking about the last bus ride of the season for the NCAA finals, Hurley said:
“I cry a little bit. I’ve cried both times. You know that last trip out of the lobby with all your fans, and you know the love and admiration you have for your team for getting you to this point, and then on that ride over, a lot goes through your mind. We’re all humans.”
Dan Hurley’s UConn Huskies are back where they belong, at the biggest stage. The Huskies are set to face Dusty May’s Michigan Wolverines in the NCAA championship game on Monday. This is going to be Hurley and UConn’s third national championship game in the last four years.
When the season started, not many expected this UConn team to go all the way to the NCAA final. But Hurley’s team has proved many wrong. They have shown real resilience and determination in every game to get here. One might say some of the credit also goes to some of Hurley’s superstitions.
Dusty May Weighs in on UConn-Illinois Final Four Game
Dusty May was in attendance at the Final Four game between UConn and Illinois before his own team’s game against Arizona. He shared why he opted to watch the game live and not prepare for his final four game.
“Well, the prep is so short anyway. I felt like if I don’t watch I’m going to watch that game regardless, so I can actually save myself some time in the middle of the night last night. And also, just I’m a fan of the sport first and foremost, like to sit core side and watch those two teams play in that environment,” he said.
“I mean, there’s still some fan in me, and obviously I had to get my notepad and pen out to make it look like I was working, but I was enjoying high-level basketball,” he added.
