Troubles Multiply for Mark Pope as Transfer Portal Exit Reportedly Beckons for More Kentucky Stars

Kentucky Wildcats coach Mark Pope may be facing additional problems after his team prematurely exited the NCAA Tournament. Pope’s Wildcats were eliminated in the second round by the Iowa State Cyclones, losing 82-63.

On Saturday, On3’s Wildcats insider Jack Pilgrim detailed some upcoming player exits from Kentucky via the transfer portal, starting with junior Jaland Lowe. According to Pilgrim, Lowe’s departure could trigger more Wildcats exits, including Jayden Quaintance.

“It’s the first domino of many to fall in the coming weeks, with a run of value-driven transfers expected ahead of the portal opening on April 7. Kentucky is hyper-focused on avoiding another cycle of reckless spending and, if possible, clearing the books to reset the table with players’ costs matching anticipated production. Many current Wildcats would be welcome back, but with steep pay cuts relative to what they’d get on the open market, a non-starter for many agents and families,” Pilgrim wrote.

“It’s setting up what appears to be a potential mass exodus in Lexington with returners counted on one hand out of 12 with remaining eligibility — 11 when you consider Jayden Quaintance‘s expected draft jump,” the report continued.

Pope just wrapped up his second year at the helm of the Kentucky-based program. He took over in the 2024-25 season after John Calipari transferred to the Arkansas Razorbacks. He led the Wildcats to an overall record of 22-14 (10-8 SEC), and they were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the SEC tournament.

Jack Pilgrim Says Mark Pope’s Staff Knows Where To Allocate Their Funds In The Offseason

Given everything that’s been shared about the future landscape of the Kentucky Wildcats, Jack Pilgrim reported that coach Mark Pope and his coaching staff know where to allocate their funds.

The Wildcats are keeping their options open for top players, including Tyran Stokes.

“That’s not to say Kentucky isn’t willing to spend big this offseason, however. No. 1 recruit Tyran Stokes and G-League star Dink Pate are significant cap chunks the Wildcats are keeping open, while Pope is expected to go big-game hunting at the starting point guard position, eyeing the best talent the transfer portal has to offer,” Pilgrim detailed.
