There’s no better compliment for a budding point guard than hearing Magic Johnson call them ‘best PG in America.’ Michigan State Spartans point guard, Jeremy Fears Jr., received that honor after his recent performance.
The Spartans played the Louisville Cardinals in the second round of the NCAA Tournament today. They controlled the game from the beginning, leading 36-31 at halftime. The Spartans won 77-69 and advanced to the Sweet 16.
Fears Jr. stole the show in Buffalo today. He played 37 minutes for 12 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 steal. He made a real impact on playmaking, facilitating, and controlling the pace of the game. Fears Jr. had 16 assists in the game.
The entire team had 22 assists, which shows how dominant he was with the ball. NBA legend and Michigan State alum, Magic Johnson, was all praise for Fears Jr. after the game. He took to social media to congratulate the team and heap praise on the point guard.
“I just finished watching my Michigan State Spartans defeat Louisville 77-69. I believe Jeremy Fears Jr. is the best PG in America and today he scored 12 points and 16 assists to record the most assists in Michigan State’s history in the NCAA tournament!” Magic wrote.
Magic also praised forward Coen Carr, who recorded the first double-double of his career.
“Coen Carr had his first career double-double scoring 21 points and 10 assists. MSU’s bench came up big with 21 total points, led by Trey Fort who had 12. The Spartans advance to the Sweet Sixteen!” he added.
Magic represented the program from 1977 to 1979. Before he joined the NBA and became a five-time NBA champion, Magic won the NCAA trophy with the Michigan State Spartans.
Jeremy Fears Jr. was Hyped After His Performance
Fears Jr. had arguably the best performance of his career so far. He controlled the game and helped turn the results in his team’s favor. In addition to that, he helped his team advance to the next round of the NCAA Tournament.
After the game, Fears Jr. talked about the legacy of the program, outlining how some of the best point guards in the world have come out of the Michigan State program.
“This Point Guard University,” he said. “Coach (Tom Izzo) had great point guards before me and I’m just trying to keep it going, but overall it’s my teammates. You know teammates they making the shots, they doing the hard part I’m just getting them the ball.”
Fears Jr. has now added his name to the list of remarkable point guards from Michigan State. His 16 assists were the most by a Spartans player in March Madness history.
