Head coach Kelvin Sampson has taken the Houston Cougars to the Sweet Sixteen for the seventh straight season. The Cougars crushed Texas A&M 88-57 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Sampson’s team has dominated both rounds, winning by more than 30 points.
Their seven consecutive Sweet 16 appearances are the longest active streak in the nation and one of the longest since the NCAA expanded to 64 teams in 1985.
To celebrate the deep run in March Madness, Sampson was joined by his daughter, Lauren, before the important stage of the NCAA Tournament. In the image shared by Lauren, the head coach and his daughter appear to be having dinner at a restaurant. Lauren knows that the job’s only half done as she wrote:
“The calm before the storm…. I got dad to smile 😊”
During this Sweet 16 streak since 2019, Houston has reached three Elite Eights, made two Final Fours and has also played in a national championship game. Sampson’s Houston has won more games than any Division I team over the past eight years.
Who is Kelvin Sampson’s Daughter Lauren Sampson?
Lauren Sampson is also associated with the University of Houston men’s basketball program, like her father. She works as the Director of External Operations. She manages team branding, game-day operations, and fan engagement.
Lauren has previous experience in sports marketing and operations with schools like Indiana and the College of Charleston. Lauren’s brother, Kellen Sampson, is an assistant coach on the same team.
After watching Kellen emulating his father of throwing suit into the ground whenever he gets frustrated in the game, Kelvin told his wife, he was going to coach basketball.
“I told Karen then: We have no choice. There is no chance that boy is not going to coach,” Kelvin said. “He has figured out that his dad throws his coat off at the start of games, whether he is mad or not. He is going to take the coat off. He’s taking his coat off, stalking the sidelines, pointing and saying stuff.”
Lauren also spoke about their family scenarios with all three of them working for the same program.
“It’s so much a continuation of how Kellen and I grew up. Half of family dinners would be salt and pepper shakers dissecting a play, and the other half was how do we get people to a game? We have this former player, and how do we help him look for a job? So much of what we do now is how we grew up,” Lauren said. “My dad was a coach’s kid, so his memories were of going to his dad’s practices and being around his dad’s players. That is very much how Kellen and I grew up, and that’s how Kellen’s kids are growing up. So, it’s just so much a continuation of our formative years.”
Kelvin Sampson’s Houston will next face Illinois in the Sweet 16 (South Region semifinal).
