Houston Cougars coach Kelvin Sampson showered his assistant coach, Hollis Price, with praise ahead of March Madness. Sampson’s Cougars will begin their March Madness run in the first round of the South Region against Alex Pribble’s Idaho Vandals at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on Thursday.
Ahead of the game, Sampson suggested that the Oklahoma Sooners retire coach Price’s jersey, as he had a phenomenal college basketball career with the Sooners.
“Hollis Price’s jersey should be retired at Oklahoma. You have to honor your past. It’s important to understand and honor your past and then build on it,” Sampson was quoted saying by Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte.
Price played collegiate basketball for the Oklahoma-based program for four years, from 1999 to 2003. The 46-year-old’s best year came in 2002, when he helped the Sooners reach the NCAA Final Four and was a consensus second-team All-American the next year. After retiring from professional basketball in 2011, he eventually landed an assistant role with Sampson in 2021, following a 10-year stint as a coach.
Kelvin Sampson’s Two Children Graduated From The University Of Oklahoma
It seems as though the connections coach Kelvin Sampson has with the Oklahoma Sooners and the University of Oklahoma as a whole run deeper than just his assistant coach. Sampson revealed that his two children, Lauren and Kellen, both graduated from the aforementioned school.
Sampson added that his kids are still fans of the Houston Cougars.
“They both love the University of Oklahoma. That’s their second-favorite school. Don’t get it twisted. My two kids are Cougars. They know who is writing the paychecks,” Kelvin Sampson was quoted saying by Joseph duarte.
